🏰 #21 Five mistakes to avoid while doing PLG + Free Resource

Last week I signed up for an account with one of the most popular PLG model companies in the B2B space. Here's what happened within 48 hours of giving them my work email:

Hey — It's Mariano.

Wishing you a lovely Saturday Sunday from 🏰 SaaS-HQ.com

Welcome to our newsletter. Every week, we send:

✅ 1 to 3 bite-sized case studies to grow your SaaS

✅ 1 to 3 curated resources from top-notch experts

Let’s dive in!

1) Five mistakes to avoid while doing PLG

I found this post from Santosh Sharan. It takes a critical look at how aggressive PLG can be in SaaS and makes you think about how we treat the conversion path.

2) How ahrefs prioritize what to write about next?

Si Quan Ong (SQ Ong) has written 100+ blog posts for the Ahrefs blog, and last week he did an amazing AMA (Ask Me Anything) on LinkedIn.

The entire comments section is super interesting to read; he shares many insights about content marketing.

One particularly caught my attention, and is this simple scorecard. So easy for everyone to implement in their SEO process:

– Simple, huh?

3) Prompt Engineering Guide (by Open AI)

It's not a growth tactic per se, but OpenAI just released this guide, and I find it really useful and clear.

There are 6 Prompt Engineering Strategies:

1. Write clear instructions
2. Provide reference text
3. Split complex tasks into simpler subtasks
4. Give the model time to "think"
5. Use external tools
6. Test changes systematically

If you prompt, worth reading at least once.

How to build a community

Took this extract from Jared Robin about building communities.

It’s worth reading because:

1) Jared built RevGenius, a community for Sales and Revenue people in SaaS up to +35k members.

2) He is now doing it again, in this case, he is rallying a new community for beehiiv (a newsletter platform). He shares some insights in The Collab, his newsletter.

What I loved the most was how he went from 0 to 1k Members by doing “things that don't scale”. What we say founder-led approach. Enough to create the initial spark.

Account @ConnorShowler regularly posts “sneaky backlinks” on x.

Sneaky backlinks are a kind of black hat SEO trick 🎩.

Not sure how effective they are, but you can ask your SEO and if he say yes here is a comprehensive list to start (free and ungated):

That’s all for this week!
Until next Saturday! 👋

Best,
Mariano Martene
